Rabat – Morocco’s national team arrived in Madrid on Sunday, ahead of their friendly game on Tuesday against Peru.
The Atlas Lions will play their Peruvian counterparts in the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium on March 28, with hopes of continuing their good run at the World Cup and the recent victory over Brazil.
The team recently defeated five-time world champions Brazil, who are also ranked by FIFA as the best national team in the world, 2-1 at the Tangier Grand Stadium.
Morocco recently made history by becoming the first African and Arab team to make it to the semi-finals of a World Cup tournament, defeating giants such as Belgium, Spain, and Portugal.
Despite losing the third-place match to Croatia and finishing the tournament fourth, the Atlas Lions were treated to a hero’s welcome in the capital Rabat upon their return.
Following the game against Brazil, where Morocco became the first Arab team to ever defeat the South American side, Brazilian coach Ramon Menezes described them as a “very strong” team.
International friendlies such as this one serve as a chance for teams to build chemistry and for coaches to experiment with different tactics and try new players.
Morocco is currently ranked the 11th best team in the world, according to FIFA, while Peru occupies the 21st place.
The two teams have only faced each other once in the 1970 World Cup, where Peru defeated Morocco 3-0.
