(Kitco News) – According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru (MINEM), silver production in Peru, the world’s third largest silver producing country, was 254,827 kg (8.2 moz) in September 2023, down 1% compared to 256,766 kg (8.3 moz) mined in September 2022.

In January-September 2023 (9M 2023), silver production in Peru amounted to 2,212,044 kg (71.1 moz), which is a decrease of 3.5% compared to January-September 2022 (2,293,362 kg or 73.7 moz).

MINEM said this negative performance was primarily due to the lower production reported by Compañía Minera Antamina (-28.3%) and Compañía Minera Ares (-12.8%).

At the company level, Compañía Minera Antamina (owned by Glencore (33.75%), BHP Billiton (33.75%), Teck (22.5%), and Mitsubishi Corporation (10%)) was the largest silver producer in Peru accounting for 12.8% share of the country’s total silver production, followed by Volcan Compañía Minera (8.1%) and Hochschild Mining’s Compañía Minera Ares (7.5%).

At the regional level, Pasco was first accounting for 20.3% share of Peru’s total silver production, followed by Áncash (18.0%) and Junín (15.9%).
