The General Staff of the Ukrainian military said 34 combat clashes took place on the front line during the day on September 7 and that the situation in the east and south of Ukraine “remains difficult.” The Ukrainian military repelled attacks in the Kupyansk, Bakhmut, and Avdiyivka areas, it said in its evening assessment. “The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue to conduct an offensive operation in the Melitopol direction, destroy the enemy, and step-by-step liberate the occupied territories,” it reported. A late air strike on Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk region wounded two people after constant shelling of the region throughout the day,…

LIMA, Sep 28 2023 (IPS) – Nearly 700,000 people have migrated internally in Peru due to the effects of climate change. This mass displacement is a clear problem in this South American country, one of the most vulnerable to the global climate crisis due to its biodiversity, geography and 28 different types of climates. “We recognize migration due to climate change as a very tangible issue that needs to be addressed,” Pablo Peña, a geographer who is coordinator of the Emergency and Humanitarian Assistance Unit of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Peru, told IPS. In an interview with IPS at…

LONDON — Archaeologists have discovered a 1,000-year-old mummy — believed to be of an adult individual — in Peru’s capital, Lima. The mummy, which was discovered at the Huaca Pucllana archaeological site in the upscale Miraflores neighborhood, was found alongside two ceramic vessels and textiles. The discovery becomes the latest in a string of ancient discoveries made in Peru this year. “I find it quite interesting that right in the heart of Miraflores, in the middle of the city, surrounded by modern buildings and constructions, an important site is still preserved,” said lead archaeologist Mirella Ganoza. Ganoza noted the mummy had long hair…

MANILA – South Korea has added its voice to the growing number of nations expressing support for the 2016 arbitral award that invalidated Beijing’s claim to most of the South China Sea, as it joined the United States and Japan in condemning China for its “dangerous and aggressive behavior” in the disputed waters and urging it to adhere to the ruling. An analyst called Seoul’s move a marked departure from its passive stand on Indo-Pacific issues and its intention to be more vocal as a “responsible stakeholder” in the region while seeking greater defense cooperation with the Philippines. The trilateral statement…

Only months after then-President Pedro Castillo attempted an executive coup, Peru is set to implement a historic increase in military spending. In 2023 alone, the budget is set to expand by nearly $100 million, with a final budget projection of $2.6bn by 2028. Proponents argue this augmentation is necessary to combat an ever-growing laundry list of threats. It’s true that Peru has had its hands full in recent years on issues ranging from narco-terrorism to Shining Path insurgents. However, it would be a mistake to evaluate this ballooning of defense spending without considering its political context. Considering recent flirtations with authoritarianism, this…

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday said he expects Wang Yi, the recently reappointed Chinese Foreign Minister, to visit the US, after Washington extended a formal invitation earlier in the week. The invitation was earlier extended to Wang Yi’s predecessor, Qin Gang, who was removed after only seven months in the position. Mr Qin has not been seen publicly since late June. “We fully expect Chinese counterparts to come to the United States,” Mr Blinken said. “There is an obligation that both the United States and China responsibly manage this relationship, and that starts with talking, including dealing…

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has called for a “great national reconciliation” in the wake of a fresh outburst of protests in the South American country. Nevertheless, in Friday’s speech before Congress, Boluarte also appealed for legislative powers to be extended to the executive branch for 120 days, in an effort to curtail crime among other issues. She argued the measures were necessary, as “Peru needs to face — with more strength and efficiency — delinquency and crime”. “We assumed the government in the midst of one of the worst political, social and climatological crises that our country has experienced,” she told Congress as demonstrators…

On Tuesday, Ukrainian journalist Roman Bochkala posted a video of himself apparently somewhere in the United Kingdom, standing in front of a crew working on a half-painted tank. The tank and others like it soon would be in Ukraine, Bochkala said. Bochkala described the tank as a 1980s-vintage Challenger 1. It’s not. It’s a Chieftain, the 62-ton tank that came before the Challenger 1 … in the 1960s. The diesel-powered, four-person Chieftain is obsolete but not useless. “It will comprehensively outclass [ex-Soviet] T-54/55, T-62, T-64 and T-72 [tanks],” tweeted Nicholas Drummond, a British armor consultant. A Chieftain can fire, while moving, a wide array…

LIMA, July 19 (Reuters) – Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets in Peru on Wednesday in marches organized by groups opposed to President Dina Boluarte, while police took anti-riot measures against some demonstrators, arresting at least six. Peaceful protesters affiliated with left-wing groups and unions marched in the capital Lima, while isolated incidents involving the police were reported in an Andean region linked to past social conflicts, media reported. “We want justice, peace and calm, and that Boluarte leaves immediately,” said protester Dionisio Flores in Lima. Many Peruvians accuse Boluarte and her allies of illegitimately removing and jailing her leftist predecessor Pedro…
