Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team posted a 2:0 victory over Brazil in their second game at the 2023 SheBelieves Cup. The Sunday night win at Geodis Park in Nashville moved Canada into second place in the four-nation tournament behind the hosts USA, with Canada’s group finale scheduled for Wednesday 22 February against Japan. In the Sunday victory over Brazil, Vanessa Gilles and Evelyne Viens scored the goals while goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan and her backline posted the clean sheet. Kailen Sheridan was also named Gatorade Player of the Match while Canadian forward Janine Beckie made her milestone 100th international “A” appearance.

“We said today we had to climb, we had to keep moving forward and we did that,” said Bev Priestman, Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team Head Coach. “To score two goals through set plays and keep a clean sheet against Brazil, overall I’m really pleased with the team’s committed mindset to get the win tonight and bounce back.”

Vanessa Gilles opened the scoresheet with her third career “A” international goal off a corner kick in the 31st minute. Jessie Fleming’s right-footed shot connected with Gilles at the near post as she raced from the penalty spot and took advantage of a Brazilian defender’s fall to powerfully head the ball over the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Lorena.

The second goal was scored by substitute Evelyne Viens in the 72nd minute on a play resulting from a free kick from about 30 yards out and to the left by Jessie Fleming. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts by the Canadians and failed clearances by the Brazilians, Viens volleyed the ball into the box past the goalkeeper on the right side of the net after it deflected off a Brazilian player. It was the fourth career “A” international goal for Viens.

Next, Canada will face Japan on Wednesday 22 February in Frisco, TX at 15.00 local (16.00 ET/13.00 PT) for their final SheBelieves Cup match.
